A Cool-Looking, Low-Profile Youth Helmet That Makes Safety Fun

For kids, “cool” and “safe” are rarely synonymous, but the Brentwood Jr. helmet from Bern aims to change that. The helmet is made from a lightweight and low-profile “Zip Mold+” injected foam that keeps it from looking too big and bulky while still being safe. This Bern Brentwood Jr. helmet review covers all the details!

In addition to a slim design, the Brentwood Jr. comes in a variety of fun styles that I legitimately wish were available in Bern’s adult-sized models! Of course, it comes in classic color schemes like Black, White, Blue, and Grapefruit, but that’s just scratching the surface. We received the Metallic Silver Shark Bite print that ignited my inner child’s glee, and other prints are available including Blue Wing with a stylized Macaw design and Purple Tiger with retro-style stripes. These colors and patterns are unique to the Brentwood Jr., as Bern’s other youth-sized helmets feature their own fun designs.

Pros
  • Comes in a whopping 7 unique eye-catching colors and/or prints.
  • Includes rotational force protection with a yellow MIPS layer.
  • Includes sun protection with a flippable visor attached to the helmet’s removable padding layer.
  • Adjustable for a wide range of noggin sizes thanks to the “compass” dial system.
  • Includes a secure clip that won’t easily come free.
  • Compatible with Bern’s removable, USB rechargeable Quickmount Asteroid light with up to a 24-hour battery life
Cons
  • The MIPS layer adds an extra layer of safety, but parents should be aware that it can occasionally snag and pull hairs.
While your youngling might not agree, safety is at least equally important to a “cool” factor. Rest assured that Bern placed protection on equal footing; the Brentwood Jr. includes the ever-important Multi-directional Impact Protection System – or MIPS – to reduce the risk of concussions should an impact occur. Full disclosure: this helmet is not rated for the potential speeds of e-bikes like Bern’s Nino youth helmet, but is instead meant for non-electric-assisted biking.

You can learn more about the MIPS system and its function at the MIPS Protection website, but there’s a good reason it is included. This yellow membrane can move slightly in the event of a crash, absorbing some of the force that would otherwise cause injury. Keep in mind that the layer can sometimes snag stray hairs, but we think the added safety is worth the risk.

Another element of the Brentwood Jr. that blends practicality with a cool factor is the included visor. Where many helmets include a minimal built-in brim that does little to keep the sun out of sensitive eyes, Bern’s helmets include a removable padded liner with an attached visor. This bill looks and functions like that of a baseball cap, and can be flipped up and out of the way when needed.

Our tester loved the Metallic Silver Shark Bite version, but the helmet has 6 other options to choose from.

With 13 vents, the helmet is breathable. It also has an interior MIPS layer.

With cool and fun designs, the helmet is not only safe, but something kids will want to wear!

When it comes to fit, the Brentwood Jr. is offered in a single size equivalent to an Adult Small. This fits children with head circumference measurements between 52 and 55.5 cm / 20 ½ to 21 ¾ inches, which equates to hat sizes from 6 ½ to 7. The helmet includes a fit system with Bern’s “Compass” dial to adjust and customize its tightness around the back of the head.

We appreciated that the helmet was easy to adjust, but also that it felt quite secure. The chin strap’s clip took a little effort for us to open, meaning that small fingers won’t be able to remove the helmet easily.

To summarize, the Brentwood Jr. helmet is a cool-looking and fun way of ensuring your child’s protection. Instilling good bike safety habits often means playing into their psychology, and what better way is there to do that than to find a helmet that matches their unique style?
