Bafang’s Gear Variable Transmission incorporates a 5-speed drivetrain that shifts automatically.
GVT is said to offer precise automatic shifting and give riders “advanced transmission control.” The hubs are said to be easy to integrate into a system and are “belt-friendly.”
The GVT hubs are reported to reduce maintenance needs and increase durability, and ultimately increase the lifespan of the e-bike.
Bafang has released two hubs so far, the five-speed G500A, plus the G300A. The G500A is rated to withstand up to 200Nm of torque and comes in 200mm and 175mm dropout spacing options. Each gear in the hubs is tested for 10,000 impact cycles.
As we’ve seen with Pinion’s MGU, manufacturers are starting to incorporate multi-gear drivetrains into motors. These designs give manufacturers opportunities to eliminate the traditional multi-gear drivetrain and replace it with something that is lighter, more durable and requires less maintenance, all good things for people who may not consider working on their e-bike to be a fun hobby.
