Aventon Ramblas eMTB Review 2024Aventon Ramblas eMTB Review 2024

Aventon has just announced an exciting new addition to its lineup of e-bikes. The new model is called the Ramblas and it is an electric mountain bike. And it really is an eMTB. Where many e-bikes will claim they can go anywhere, we can attest after our initial rides that this one really can.

If there’s an e-bike that does a better job of combining affordability with performance, we haven’t seen it. We didn’t even think an eMTB could be produced at this price. In our brief review of the Aventon Ramblas we will break down just what makes this eMTB so impressive.

Note: stay tuned, as we are just finishing up our full testing of the Aventon Ramblas eMTB. We should have our full, in-depth review of the Ramblas in the next few days.

Aventon Ramblas Spec Review: Bike Overview

We encounter e-bikes that claim to be eMTBs, but don’t really qualify. We say that as people who ride both mountain bikes and eMTBs on challenging terrain and we know when an e-bike won’t meet our needs. And we’re here to say that we didn’t imagine anyone could produce such a capable eMTB for less than $3000.

Frame and fork

The Aventon Ramblas is built around a 6061 aluminum frame paired with a 130mm-travel RockShox Silver 35 air-spring suspension fork. The fork is much better than we would expect at this price level, but note that the coil suspension doesn’t come with any compression adjustment.

The Ramblas is made in four sizes: small, medium, large and XL. The small features 27.5-in. wheels while the medium, large and XL are all build with 29-in. wheels. We think it’s a smart move to offer 4 sizes, and we also like the modern geometry. We’ll dive more into how the bike handles in our full review, but the short and sweet answer is that it’s a ton of fun to ride and we think Aventon is spot on with the geometry of the Ramblas.

Motor and battery

The Ramblas is built with a new motor from Aventon, the A100. Technically it was developed jointly with manufacturer Gobao. Aventon makes their frames (which is a nice advantage they have), but they don’t make motors, hence the joint venture here with Gobao, and is similar to what Specialized does with Brose on their motors. This is a mid-drive motor that produces 250W and a stiff 100Nm of torque. You’ll see from our hill tests when they are released that the motor is very powerful, especially with hill climbs.

The battery is a shockingly large 708Wh lithium-ion battery packed with LG cells. Aventon claimed riders may cover as much as 80 mi. on a single charge. We actually got over 100 on our low PAS range test. No, that range test isn’t done on single track, but it shows you that you are going to be able to go a long way on this battery.

This is a Class 1 e-bike with a maximum assist speed of 20 mph, and no throttle. That makes it legal to ride on any trail system that allows e-bikes. And the answer for those who are asking if they can unlock it and go over 20 with assist – the answer is ‘No’, Aventon does not let you push this past 20 in the app settings. We like this, as it makes it so the bike can ride on any single track in the USA that allows e-bikes.

Aventon Ramblas Specs and FeaturesAventon Ramblas Specs and Features
Most e-bikes in this price range are equipped with 8- or 9-speed drivetrains, which are underpowered for technical terrain. They simply don’t have gears low enough for the steepest hills. The Aventon Ramblas comes with a SRAM NX Eagle drivetrain with an 11-50t cassette; that’s a nearly 500 percent gear range, which meets the industry standard.

SRAM’s DB8 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes are paired with a 200mm rotor in the front and a 180mm rotor in the rear, which will offer riders all the control they need to tackle difficult descents and feel confident that they are running the show.

Our only criticism of note is that Aventon spec’d the excellent Maxxis Recon tire, but then didn’t follow through with tubeless-compatible rims. That’s a miss. Tubeless tires flat less, can be run at lower air pressure for better traction and comfort and even offer less rolling resistance.

One of the other disqualifying features of many alleged eMTBs is a lack of a dropper post. Aventon didn’t make that mistake. They included a quality dropper post, and chose one with more adjustability (150mm rather than 125mm) for the three largest sizes.

Let’s recap the basics here if only because they are so surprising as to be tough to believe. The Aventon Ramblas comes in four sizes and features a powerful mid-drive motor that produces 100Nm of torque and is powered by a 708Wh battery. It includes a 12-speed drivetrain, 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes, quality tires and a dropper post.

If you’d asked us how much that eMTB would retail for before we knew the price, we’d have guessed north of $3000, maybe closer to $3500. That this e-bike is being introduced at $2699 is a shocker.

We’re not sure how they pulled this off, but this is easily the most exciting e-bike launch so far in 2024, and it may end up being one of the most exciting e-bike launches of the year.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
